Northwest New Jersey’s first-ever Intergenerational Child Care Center, The Friendship Center serves as a model for other childcare groups pursuing the intergenerational childcare concept.
In 1991, members of the Heath Village Board of Trustees saw a growing need, along with a promising opportunity—a way to provide a unique developmental learning experience for children while enriching the lives of Heath Village residents.
The concept was simple: with so many children facing “gaps” of quality time and constructive social engagement with adults, why not draw on the rich pool of caring people at Heath Village? With the help of a grant from the Lorna W. Reynolds Children’s Development Fund—and the generosity of Heath Village residents in volunteering their time—The Friendship Center was, and continues to be, an immediate success.
Celebrating its 35th Anniversary in 2026, the Friendship Center continues to receive top ratings for the quality of its childcare. Since the Center’s opening, more than 100 Heath Village residents have volunteered their time. The Center has been the subject of an award-winning video and numerous magazine and newspaper articles, and continues to serve as a model for other communities.
Best of all, it’s a place that brings people and generations together—an ongoing source of smiles, connection and positive educational experiences for all involved.
